Grading Specifications:

  • Grading Specifications: based on each individual piece of timber
  • Any number or combinations of defects shall be permitted provided that the piece shall hold together in the course of normal handling.
  • KD industrial grades are usually dried to under 15% MC, but there is no guarantee that this will always be the case for every piece of timber.
  • Anti-sap-stained timber is shipped without seasoning and treated against development of blue stain, which usually holds for about 3 months from time of treatment.
  • Green Industrial Grades (193Kb PDF)    KD Industrial Grades (195Kb PDF)

Treatment: Available treated and non-treated

Furniture Grade

Furniture Grade (Standard Grade AS 4785) is typically used for furniture, shelving, lining, flooring, DIY and & remanufacturing and is only available in dressed form (S4S or pattern).

Finished Dry Sizes:

Grading Specifications:

Treatment: Available treated and non-treated

Cuttings Grades

Cuttings Grades (NZS3631:1988), are typically used for furniture, & remanufacturing where clear fibre is required – either as long lengths (cuttings 1 and 2) or for finger jointing (cuttings 2 and 3) Cuttings grades are usually shipped sawn KD

Finished Dry Sizes:

Width 75,100 , 125, 150, 200mm
Thickness 25, 32, 38, 50mm
Lengths 0.9 to 6.0m mostly random length packs

Grading Specifications:

No.1 Cuts - Each piece yields 70% recovery of 1 metre or longer clear cutting.

No.2 Cuts - Each piece yields 70% recovery of 600mm or longer clear cutting.

No. 3 Cuts -Each piece shall yield 60% of its length in clear cuttings of 200mm or longer.

Note: The above pictures are front and back sides of sample boards only. Pine timber is a natural product where each piece will vary.

Treatment: Available treated and non-treated

Cut-of-Log (COL) Grade

Pith-Free-Cut-Of-Log (PFCOL) Grade is typically used for furniture and remanufacturing.

Thickness 23, 38, 50 mm
Lengths 0.9 to 6.0m mostly random length packs

Grading Specifications:

  • Generally a mix if cuttings grades not allowing pith

  • COL Grades (153Kb PDF)

Treatment: Available treated and non-treated

Premium Dressing Grade

Ideally suited for uses where clear boards do not provide enough character, or a tight knot appearance is required. For example: higher grade furniture, panelling and high quality exterior use.

Finished KD Sizes: Sawn

Width 75, 100, 150, 200 mm
Thickness 25, 32, 38. 40, 50 mm
Lengths 1.8 - 6.0 m

Grading Specifications:

Treatment: Available treated and non-treated

Clear Grades

Clear Grades are typically used for furniture, interior decoration and remanufacturing where long clear fibre is required.

Finished Dry Sizes:

Width 75, 100, 125, 150 mm
Thickness 23, 38, 50 mm
Lengths 0.9 to 5.4m mostly random length packs

Grading Specifications:

No. 1 Clear - Clear both faces and edges, may contain an occasional very small blemish or a natural coloured epicormic.

No.2 Clear - Clear 1 face and 1 edge. The second edge may contain a characteristic of no more than 1/3rd of the thickness measured from the back face. Small blemishes permitted as in No.1 Clear.

Note: The above pictures are front and back sides of sample boards only. Pine timber is a natural product where each piece will vary.

  • Generally a mix if cuttings grades not allowing pith

  • Clear Grades (100Kb PDF)

Width 70, 90 mm
Thickness 22 mm
Lengths 2.1 to 5.4m set lengths and random length packs

Grading Specifications:

Treatment: Typically H3 treated either ACQ, TanE or CopperAzole

Structural Grades

Structurally graded plantation pine is a great alternative to steel, concrete and tropical hardwoods.

It has less embedded energy than steel or concrete and is therefore a much more environmentally friendly product. More, it actually stores corbon dioxide and new trees are growing in the area the pine came from.

In comparison to tropical hardwoods machine stress graded pine has a guaranteed, uniform strength properties, comes in set lengths packs and is virtually 100% usable. It is lighter than tropical hardwoods and productivity in a truss plant usually goes up significantly using pine.

Structural pine grades can be supplied as MGP (machine graded pine) or “F” grades. Both grading systems can be achieved via machine grading, but ‘F” grades can also be supplied by visual grading only. MGP grades are more uniform in material properties and are of higher value.

The table below shows the properties of structural pine grades:

MGP grades

A – readily available
B – regularly scheduled production
C – longer lead times and limited supply

In addition to the mechanical properties the grading allows:

Knots & Knot Holes Not to exceed 50% KAR (Knot-Area-Ratio)*
Wane and Want Not to exceed 40% of face & 33% of edge
Machine Skip Not to exceed 0.5mm depth
Length 0mm under specified length
Width & Thickness 0mm under to 2.0mm over

*Knot Area Ratio is the size of the knot in the cross section

F grades

Are supplied per AS 2858 in the same sizes like MGP grades.
