INDICATIVE GUIDE
Softwood Property Guide
The aim of this document is to provide indicative guidelines for comparing different species and to help match the best resource to the specific application. We hope that it will help to provide a quick and easy way to better understand resource specific properties.

Treatment
Softwood is wood from coniferous trees like pine, spruce, or cedar. Treatment options include pressure treatment to force preservatives deep into the material for decay and insect resistance, and surface coatings like paints or stains for moisture and UV protection.
Preservative Types
Three classes of preservatives are commonly used for the pressure treatment of pine timber.
Classes
The best indicator for appropriate use of treated pine is "hazard class". The type and degree of attack to which timber may be exposed in service is known as the "hazard". Suitable treatments are defined for each hazard class.
